The Animation & Visual Effects Union has seen an unprecedented soar in membership since the beginning of the lockdown with a membership increase in excess of 50%. The success of DNEG’s Feature Animation workers banding together and pushing back against pay cuts without consultation has convinced many others that sticking together has tremendous benefits. BECTU was there providing vital information and advice regarding what action they can take and where they stand, legally. In the end, it was all down to the workers in securing this win by simply sticking together… that’s essentially all a union is.

We all need to keep up this momentum. Industry-wide unionisation is a very strong possibility now, but we need your help! The higher our numbers get, the stronger we get, the more power we have. It’s as simple as that.

Joining the AVU gets you:

  1. Membership of a larger media & entertainment union (Bectu) that is strong in many other departments of the UK film and TV industries already

  2. Legal (representation, support, paid legal fees) and Career Advice as and when you need it.

  3. Access to a private anonymous member forum, designed to bring everyone together and allow real-time discussions on pressing issues and events.

  4. A democratically elected committee who fight for a better industry.

  5. Creating a more profitable and efficient industry.

  6. Democratically vote on what the AVU tackles in the industry.

What the AVU will never do:

  1. Go against the democratic choices of its members (the AVU never makes decisions on its own)

  2. Take action that will harm workers livelihoods or the industry itself (i.e. Action that would push work outside the UK)

  3. Create pay caps

Please see our FAQs to clear up any industry myths.

Imagine what good we can do if we ALL stick together. When the industry fully returns to work, we need to go back together.
